Friends of Roma&più, this weekend an event that is absolutely not to be missed will be taking place: the Festa del Baccanale in Campagnano di Roma from April 27 to 29 which each year attracts thousands of visitors.

At this year’s festival – the 54th  you can take part in the Cena in Cantina (Dinner in the Wine Cellar) in the squares of the town organized by the various neighborhoods, browse through the stands of craftsmen and antique dealers at the Bancarelle di Campagnano (a major antiques and handicrafts fair in Central-South Italy), try the superb Campagnano artichokes roasted over the wood of grapevines and accompanied by sausage served on bread brushed with oil and grilled over charcoal. Plus, you can also watch the Palio delle contrade a dorso d’asino (race between the various neighborhoods of the city with riders on donkeys) and the historical procession in late-Renaissance dress.

This year, the protagonist of the event will be Pane Francigeno (bread of the pilgrims on the Via Francigena to Rome) with two events dedicated to it. Pane Francigeno, made from natural sourdough starter, very little salt and local whole grain flour, is recognizable from the cross on it and is the major sign of welcome for this area at the gates of Rome.

The first event: "Trekking alla scoperta del pane francigeno" (Hiking in discovery of the bread of the Via Francigena) will take place on April 28 and will offer an opportunity to take part in a radio-guided excursion along a brief section of the Via Francigena from Campagnano to the sanctuary in Sorbo (approx. 4.5 km). On foot, on horse or by bicycle, participants will encounter a delegation from the Formello community (also on foot, but in the opposite direction) to enjoy together Pane Francigeno, wine, cheese and ricotta. This brief excursion will have an innovative approach thanks to the use of multimedia devices provided by the Urban Experience group involved in experimenting in combining the use of the web with local events. Participants should meet at 3:30 pm at Monte Razzano (in the parking lot near the town pool). The return is expected for around 7 pm.

Then, on April 29 will be "Mani in pasta" (Hands in the Dough), a stand in the square where children can shape and bake “francigeno dough” following the instructions of professional bakers. This event is being promoted by the Nonna Meca bakery, the Terre di Veio project, and the Campagnano local tourist board.
