The Angel Fountain in Monte Compatri, with its bronze winged genius was inaugurated in 1889.
Built out of tufa rock extracted from a quarry at the foot of Mount Salomone, the fountain honours the miners who with their hard work excavated the tunnels of the aqueduct.
The monument stands at the base of the Borghese pala, on the site where in earlier fountain was built in 1616 a to dispense water from the Molara spring.
In 1852 the fountain, designed by the architect Massimi, was encased in a votive shrine of lapis gabinus stone, which was later discarded when the Angel Fountain was put in its place.
