The Antiquarium is housed in Villa Barberini, which was built on part of the site of Domitian’s villa (81 – 96 AD), and holds a collection of notable quality spread out over seven rooms. Most of the collection came from the Emperor’s villa and theatre and the Bergantino or Diana ninfeo (excavations took place in 1841).
The flooring in opus spicatu, from the Roman villa, are of particular interest as are the fragments dating to the time of Domitian (Room I), the various artefacts from Domitian’s private theatre whose ruins can be seen in the Park (Rooms II and III), the beautiful collection of statues of athletes (Room IV), the sculptures from the Bergantino Ninfeo which stands on the banks of Albano Lake and was inspired by Tiberius’s cave in Sperlonga (especially the remains of sculpture groups of Scylla and the blinding of Polyphemus) (Rooms V and Vi) and the remains of sculptures from the area around the Pontificial Villa (Room VII).
