Catecombs and Basilica of Sant’Ilario – Valmontone

Among the most important Paleo-Christian – early Medieval monuments in the Lazio region, the complex is comprised of the necropolis with various precious catecombs and the Sant’Ilario Basilica that was built on the necropolis itself.

The catacombs, where were certainly Christian, were dug in the 4th – 5th C., most of them have barrel vaulted ceilings, and are formed by 6 tunnels and 5 cubicles, with light shaft providing illumination. Over the centuries they hosted hundreds of deceased; the tombs are to this day intact.
The open air necropolis, used from the 4th to the 7th C. A.D. is important because a tufa sarcophagus was found here with spiral shaped columns.
The Basilica of Sant’Ilario (6 x 10 m.) was built almost completely over the necropolis in the 9th C. and was still serving mass until the 14th C. The finds include: lanterns, 342 gravestones, coins from the 4th – 5th C. AD.
