The present Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption dates to 1626 when Bishop Ludovico Atti decided to completely rebuild it on the ruins of the earlier church that went back to the time of St. Bruno.
In 1817, the facade, which stands atop a wide staircase, was covered with Mt. Lepini stone, commissioned and paid for by Bishop Paolo Ciotti.
Inside, the church has a Greek cross floor plan, with round arches over four equal arms and a central circular cupola with a lower vault. Opening out at the sides of the four arms are eight smaller arches, framing the cross in perfect symmetry. There are four altars and four chapels, a Baptistery and a Sacresty.
The Church has many works of art, making it one of the best examples of Baroque. These include: the frescoes on the cupola of the Trinity, by Antonio Courtois, brother of Il Borgognone (1650s); the frescoes of the saint's life in the Chapel of St. Bruno (patron saint of Segni) by Lazzaro Baldi of Pistoia (late 1600s); the altarpiece in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary by Pietro da Cortona; paintings of St. John Baptist by Ignazio Tirinelli del Serrone and the Ascending Virgin with the Apostles; large canvases of the birth of the Virgin and the Virgin's presentation at the temple by Leandro Carchenne; The Doubt of St. Thomas by F. Cozza and the canvas of The Exaltation of the Cross, by Il Borgognone in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament.
This church was the site of the beatification of Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury and the sanctification of Bruno, Bishop of Segni from 1079 to 1123.
