The Cathedral of St. Lawrence the Martyr, patron saint of Zagarolo, rises over Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. Building started in 1607 by Duke Marzio Colonna and was completed by the Ludovisi family who had become the new masters of Zagarolo.
The church was built to replace an earlier building, situated in Vicolo Brembi, that had also been dedicated to St. Lawrence.
It has a Latin cross floor plan, seven altars and, despite the damage caused by two violent earthquakes and WWII which took a great deal of its artistic patrimony, still holds several notable works of art.
These include: a fresco of the Virgin and Child attributed to Cavalier d'Arpino; a triptych by Antoniazzo Romano (Antonino Aquili) and three paintings from the School of Maratta: St. John the Baptist in the desert indicates the coming of the Messiah to the disciples by Ciro Ferri; The Ecstasy of Mary Magdalen by Giuseppe Bartholomew Chiari and The Adoration of the Magi by Agostino Masucci.
