The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Cerreto Laziale dates to the 12th-13th centuries, but since then has been remodelled and refurbished so many times that the original structure has been lost.
Although there is no certainty about the year of its construction, it is known that it had become the main place of worship in Cerreto by 1372. By approx. 1600 the church had the same main building, but neither the six side chapels nor the bell tower had yet been added. The first great chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Graces, was built in 1796. This was followed by the first belltower.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in the same style as the neighbouring Chapel of Our Lady of Graces, by Sebastiano Mastrecchia was completed in 1839. The Oratory of the Holy Crucifix had been demolished to make way for it. Work to reinforce and almost rebuild the church took place between 1859-1860 when a barrel vaulted ceiling replaced the previous wooden planks. In 1870 the old belltower was demolished and work began on the new one. In 1872 the Chapel of the Holy Rosary was built by the town council. The remaining chapels were built more recently, to give the church symmetry.
The present church has a façade embellished with two pilasters that end beneath a cornice, above which is a jutting tympanum. The interior, weakly lit by the windows above the cornice, is divided by square columns, with volutes and ovolos framing the chapels.
The church houses paintings of a certain interest, such as those of Our Lady of Graces and the Saviour and also a precious wooden crucifix attributed to the 16th century.
