The cornerstone of the Church of St. Barbara in Colleferro was blessed by the Bishop of Segni, Mons. Tessaroli, on 12th July 1936. Built to a design by Engineer Moranti, the façade reproduces the style of the ancient baronial castle of Colleferro with three arches, 25m in height, and is 42m long, 16m wide and 12m high.
The Modern Romanesque Church has a central nave with a 12m high ceiling and 4m high side aisles. The beautifully made, marble main altar is placed in the centre of the main apse, with a small marble altar on each side. The priceless Donatello Crucifix in bronze, 2m high, is placed on the main altar. The only other crucifix of this type is on the main altar of the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua.
Behind the apse is the large, golden mosaic (9.5m x 4.3m) by the internationally famous artist, Prof. Marino Mazzacurati. It depicts St. Barbara coming out of the flames of an explosion, holding a flare, symbolizing faith flying over Colleferro in surveillance, protection and defence. The inscription at the bottom of the mosaic records the generous donor: Donna Lucia Parodi-Delfino.
There are two marble altars to both sides of the apse, paid for by the population in memory of the Saint's protection during WWII when 105 air raids bombed the city, the factories and the surrounding territory. There are two noteworthy, traditional mosaics by the side altars depicting St. John Bosco and Our Lady Help of Christians.
There is a stone inscription recording the early death in a tragic air accident in Rome of the brothers Paolo and Gerardo Parodi on 14th October 1936. Marble symbols of the four Evangelists, of great artistic value, are placed over the two characteristic pulpits. A lovely, mosaic Via Crucis in the Byzantine style, by Prof. Saltelli decorates the two walls of the nave, divided into 14 pictures. There is also an original, marble baptistery to the left of the entrance whose modern style echoes that of the most ancient Christian baptisteries and an altar with a classic image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
