Church of St. Blaise - Palombara Sabina

The Church of St. Blaise was originally one of the four hermit sanctuaries in the Palombara area, which included Our Lady of the Gonfalone, St. Michael and St. Nicholas.
Worship of the saint, a bishop and Eastern marytr, was brought by the monks of the Order of St. Basil who dedicated the hermitage of Palombara to him before the 10th century began.
In 1888, the archpriest Mons. Lorenzo Bernasconi, lowered the flooring of the church by more than a metre to make the interior more harmonious. During this work, the walls of the original cell, covered by the Romanic construction, and the inscription stone were exposed.
At the same time, the stairs and the marble balustrade were built. The church was restored inside in 1943 and in 1950 the facade was covered with travertine stone in honour of the Holy Year.
It is a compact building, with a nave, two side aisles and a semicircular apse. The single side chapel, polygonal in shape and dedicated to St. Victorinus, is on the left aisle. A square belltower is placed close to the left side. The interior is decorated with painting.
Each side bay holds a portal beneath a round arched lunette. The church entrance is reached by means of a small staircase.
