Chiesa di San Giorgio a Riano

The little Church of St. George, the oldest in the Riano area, was built on a hill north west of the town, close to the cemetery.
It has a very simple external structure with a small belfry containing a single bell which dates to 1442.
The restoration and restructuring that have been done over the centuries will have certainly modified the original interior of the severe medieval structure.
The semicircular apse, however, dates back to the ancient building, it is reached through little doors at each end of the main altar and holds important 12th century frescoes, including one of St. George killing the dragon.
The walls flanking the nave are also frescoed, the cycle dating to the 15th century.
The different frescoes are separated by coloured stripes featuring St. George in the centre, in the act of killing the dragon, with long blonde hair and Crusade armour on a white horse draped in red with sword and shield while a princess in pink with a white veil kneels on the green earth in the background.
The pale background also depicts a wall of red battlements surrounding a white castle with round towers which represents the hill of Riano. The frescoes were recently restored thanks to funding from the Banca Credito Cooperativo di Riano and the Institute for the Fine Arts.
