Church of St. John the Baptist - Cineto Romano

The parish church of Cineto Romano, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is an elegant building with severe architectural lines situated in a pleasant setting.
Inside, imposing pillars separate the nave and two aisles and the back wall of the nave features a noteworthy canvas of St. John the Baptist in the desert, who was given the features of a local model by the painter, Cavalier Vincenzo Manenti of Orvinio (1600-1674), who also was responsible for several paintings in the Cathedral of Tivoli.
The right aisle holds the chapel of St. Roche, whose veneration began with the 1635 plague, and altars dedicated to St. Agatha, St. Andrew the Apostle and St. Anthony of Padua.
The left aisle holds altars to Our Lady of Carmen, the Crucifixion, St. Louis and St. John the Baptist.
The well made painting of The Virgin surrounded by saints and angels dates to the 17th century.
The Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament, the Confraternity of the Rosary and the Confraternity of St. Agatha were founded in 1580 to administer the church holdings and were dissolved at a later date.
The church was built in 1280 with the birth of the borgo, when the population began to cluster their residences and livelihoods around the baronial palace.
The original structure, built with funds from the population, was fairly modest and composed of a nave. The church began to deteriorate to the extent that Cardinal Giulio Roma, Bishop of Tivoli, ordered its demolition in 1641. He also ordered the Community of Terra di Scarpa to rebuild it from the foundations in the shape that has survived to the present day.
On 13 January 1915, the earthquake which destroyed the city of Avezzano caused severe damage to the old bell tower and to the bell, which fell to the ground and smashed.
A committee was formed in 1933 to rebuild a new bell tower which was placed close to the ruins of the previous one later demolished. The painter G. Ciotti created the graffiti images of St. John the Baptist and St. Agatha, the patron saint of the town, on two sides of the bell tower.
