The Romanesque - Baroque Church of St. Lucia in San Polo dei Cavalieri is the oldest place of worship in the town, dating back to before 1400 when it was mentioned in the Orsini Statutes.
The church is reached through the chapel to the right of the altar. Over the centuries, the external façade has, sadly, been modified so much that nothing of its original style remains. The interior follows a Greek cross floor plan with a single chamber and two side chapels. The ceiling is wooden trusses. The altar is framed with stucco work columns, capitals and a triangular tympanum.
The only fragment of the original furnishing is the processional palanquin with the statue of the haloed Virgin on a cloud, her clothing ruffled by the wind, her arms raised and expression ecstatic. The congregation has placed a silver coronet on her head.
