The Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Church of St. Mary’s Well (in Italian, Santa Maria del Pozzo, in latin de Puteo) is the main Catholic place of worship in Nemi.
Legend has it that the name derives from an apparition of the Virgin Mary seen by a few young girls who were standing near a well located close to the ancient Church.
The current building was constructed on the site of the ancient chapel in the Palace at the end of the 17th century by the landowner Mario Frangipane. Today, this baroque building is one of the largest and most beautiful Churches in the area.
Inside, there is an organ that originally came from the Church of the Ara Coeli in Rome – built in 1847 – and a wooden triptych by Antoniazzo Romano, dating back to the start of the 1600s.
