There was a church dedicated to St. George in the Capocroce area of Nerola from the end of the 14th century. It was later annexed to the Church of St. Anthony Abbot.
Adapted in 1483, the church was dedicated to St. Mary and St. George. There is no further mention of the building until 1843, when it was restored.
It was completely rebuilt in 1923, following damage from the Avezzano earthquake.
The present church has a gabled roof which rises high over the central nave and a square belltower surmounted by a jutting cornice supported by struts, which originally had a pointed spire.
