The Church of St. Mary Magdalen in Capranica Prenestina has been restored at various times in its history, but its present state reflects the work carried out in the early 1700s when the Barberini family ruled the town.
The square bell tower built by Pope Martin V in the first half of the 15th century is the only element remaining of the original structure.
The imposing, majestic cupola, one of the most successful examples of Romanic 16th century architecture, is the dominant element of the church: it is a round construction with a double calotte, holding an elegant, seven arched loggia.
The church was further transformed between 1868 and 1869 when a side bay was added. The new aisle holds two more altars and a sacresty and houses the prestigious white marble lion holding a crest, which is used as a holy water font and is attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti.
