The little church of St Mary of the Oration and Death in Civitavecchia, remarkable for the elegant simplicity of its Greek cross floor plan and architectural lines, was built in 1685.
From the start, it was the seat of the ancient and venerable Brotherhood of Death, an institution in existence since the second half of the 1500s, and still present there today.
The church was almost completely restored in 1702. It is round with an elliptical cupola. There are three altars, the main one is opposite the entrance while the other two, in very ornate chapels, are on the sides, facing each other. There are 4 symmetrical doors which lead to the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament, the Oratory, the Sacresty and the Wardrobe.
On the inside the cupola, there are several admirable frescoes by the celebrated Cavaliere Giuseppe Errante of Trapani and also two wooden statues representing Christ Crucified and the Risen Christ.
