The Church of St. Mary of the Valley, situated beneath the Rocca Abbaziale in the square of the same name, in Subiaco, was designed by the architect Carlo Colombi. Commissioned by the Archpriest Vincenzo Gizzi, work began in1798 and ended in 1851, more than 50 years later.
The church was only provided with a facade in 1870, by Cardinal Carmine Gori Merosi, a Subiaco native.
The neoclassical interior, laid out in a Greek cross floorplan, contains a 14th or 16th Century painting on wood of the Madonna ascending to heaven and an 11th or 12th Century Byzantine style wooden statue of the Virgin.
