Chiesa di San Sebastiano a Castelnuovo di Porto

The small church dedicated to St. Sebastian stands on the summit of a little hill facing the fortress of Castelnuovo di Porto, on the Campana vetus, the ancient route that lead from the town to the south east of the country, has protected the congregation from the plague since the 13th century.
Gaps in the plaster surface of the external façade of the medieval structure reveal fragments of shelfs, architraves and pointed, filled-in windows. The single chambered structure, plus apse, has traces of frescoes of the Eternal blessing the Virgin and the Angel of the Annunciation on the triumphal arch.
There are paintings of St. Roche, St. Sebastian, St. Anthony of Padua on the bowl of the apse, in a deteriorated state of conservation, with the fortress and village of Castelnuovo dominating the background of countryside scenery.
The church itself can be seen to the bottom right, depicted with a small square bell tower next to the apse. Despite some clumsy retouching, the well-executed frescoes reveal a Nordic provenance datable to the 16th century.
