The present Church of St. Sebastian was built on the site of an earlier church dedicated to the same saint which dated back to the late 1500s. A public vote, and the will of the entire community, lead to the rebuilding of the church foundations after the 1656 plague. This rebuilding incorporated the remains of the earlier church whose dimensions can probably be related to the space that stretches from the present sacresty to the triumphal arch.
After various events, the church was probably finished between 1786 and 1790, albeit without the glass windows and the canopy in the sacresty.
The bell tower was built in 1772, and destroyed by lightning in 1880. in 1907, Prince Brancaccio paid for its restoration and the replacement of clock and cross. He then placed his crest on the tympanum of the facade.
The building of the church took place within the Baroque era expansion of the inhabited area and in order for the facade to line up with the expanding areas from the medieval borgo to Borgo Pio the facade had to be skewed compared to the other walls, which were based on the previous construction.
The main altar was recovered from the earlier church and decorated between 17th and 18th centuries. The stucco altar, pleasingly made, has decorative forms and models that are perfectly 17th century. The use of delicate pastels, the prevalence of curved and sinuous forms and the use of floral ornamental elements are characteristic of the rococo style popular in Italy in the early 18th century.
On the left wall, the altar to Our Lady of the Garden was built by the University of Farmworkers at the same time as that to St. Isidore. It can, therefore, be dated to the early 18th century. Pleasingly made, this too is a perfect example of rococo decoration.
