The large cistern, known as the “cisternone” was built in Albano Laziale by the Architects of the II Second Parthian Legion to provide a water supply for their camp and the nearby homes.
Its rectangular plan (50 x 30 mt) is divided into five communicating aisles covered with barrel vaults supported by 36 columns and it is entirely coated in waterproof plaster.
The cistern, which can store close to 10,000 cubic metres thanks to its imposing size, is still perfectly functional and is fed by Roman Age ducts that receive the water from springs on the slopes of the Albano lake.
