The Museum, closed for restoration work at the moment, is housed on the first floor of the 17th Century Palazzo Venturi which also serves as the site for the Carlo Maggiorani Cultural Centre, the Municipality Library and the History Archive. Established after the discovery and subsequent excavation of the ruins of the Ad Vacanas stopping place (dating to Roman times), in the Valley of Baccano, Via Cassia km 31, the museum was inaugurated in December 1989.
The collection, displayed chronologically and thematically (Early Etruscan Age, Imperial Roman Age, Middle Ages and Renaissance), includes funeral pieces identified as Etruscan-Ancient Italian, such as the burial goods from a tomb which have been dated to late 8th-early7th century B.C., and a selection of the most significant artefacts from the Ad Vacanas excavations, ranging from numerous amphoras and oil lamps to marbles, bronzes, and pieces in bone, ceramic and glass dating to the Imperial Roman age (1st to 5th century A.D.). Other pieces, dated since antiquity as Medieval and Renaissance, were discovered in territories belonging to the Municipality and some are private donations.
The exhibition is furnished with explanatory panels and real size reconstructions (such as the recreation of a Capuchin burial, from Via Amerina) which aim to illustrate the various aspects of ancient life through the history of the area and the specific sites.
