The Collegiate Church of St. Mary Major is the principal centre of Catholic worship in Lanuvio.
The present building was constructed on the site of an earlier Romanesque church dating to 1240 of which little remains, as the original marble decorations and coloured tiled flooring were completely destroyed in the 1675 restoration work commissioned by Duke Filippo Cesarini. The bell tower was designed by Tommaso Mattei, inside is a painting attributed to Giulio Romano.
Remains of a Roman domus were found beneath the Romanesque church, fragments of which - a splendid polychrome mosaic from the 4th century - can be seen in the left aisle.
The church holds 7 altars and, up until the 19th century, was the seat to 3 confraternities, the Holy Sacrament, the Sacred Rosary and the Crucifix.
