Colonna Fortress - Rocca di Cave

Browse fullscreen [x]

The Fortress which stands above the village of Cave was founded around the 9th C. for defensive purposes to protect against Saracen invasions. It dominated the Sacco valley and seemed to have belonged directly to the Apostolic Chambers, even though it was definitely a defensive bastion for the area of Subiaco, then under the auspices of the local Benedictine monastery.

At the same time as the Fortress a busy village also rose up and its religious organisation revolved around the churches of San Nicola and Santa Maria, which have since disappeared, which together with the older San Pietro, incorporated into the Fortress, led to the building complex being known as “Santi Tre” (Three Saints), a name we find mentioned in historical sources as far back as the 12th C.
In its subsequent history at the end of the Saracen invasions, the Fortress gradually lost its defensive purpose, and the name Rocca di Cave finally associated the stronghold to the nearby village.

The plan of the construction is an irregular hexagon, with four polygonal corner towers. The keep is in the middle along with the ruins of the church of San Pietro, with its cross-vaulted ceiling.
