The convent of the Friars Minor Riformati and the adjacent church, dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, were built on a hill facing Carpineto Romano in 1610 by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, nephew of Pope Clement VIII and lord of the town. At the rear of the building, now a hospice, the apartments where the cardinal lived for a while can still be seen.
The convent built by the Franciscans in the 17th century was renamed after an important study of philosophical and theological disciplines. A twisted cross of limestone is placed on the square. The recently restored façade of the church holds a marble bust of St. Peter Apostle (a sculpture of some value) on the pediment over the portal. Inside, to the right of the entrance, is a very expressive, marble statue of St. Francis by Giovanni Duprè in 1882. The church also houses the Pecci family tomb, built in 1732 by Domenico Pecci. However, the most precious artifact in the church is a painting of St. Francis receiving the stigmata, recently attributed to Caravaggio. To the right of the altar is a watercolour fresco depicting St. Louis of Toulouse in profile by Ludovico Grillotti.
The graceful side chapels house precious marble altars and well made artifacts (such as a wooden crucifix). The grandiose sagresty has black walnut wardrobes carved by Brother Silvestro da Roma. The cistern with the Aldobrandini crest at the centre of the four-sided cloister to the left of the church holds 1,000 cubic metres of water. The cloister is decorated with precious frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis, two beautifully written Latin couplets and several crests which identify the benefactors who contributed to the expense of the frescoes and the most influential families in Carpineto in the 17th century: Briganti, Coluzzi, Pecci, Benedetti, Campagna, Caldarozzi, Fasanella, Campanello, Caporossi, Sargiorgi, Prosperi, Mercuri, Porta, Gavillucci, Rossetti, Seneca, Simoni.
