Council Archaeological Museum - Segni

The distinctive characteristic of the Archaeological Museum of Segni is the close links it has with scientific research and with the town itself.

The Council Archaeological Museum of Segni is housed in the thirteenth-century Palazzo della Comunità (Community Building) that looks out onto the main piazza of the town. The exhibitive itinerary is arranged on two levels, covering more than 400 sqm, and it accompanies visitors on a trip through the ancient and medieval urbanism and topography of the city and its territory.

The exhibition has a strong didactic imprint. Every section is equipped with panels that, through brief texts and many detailed illustrations, explain the themes as they are broached.

A brief section is devoted to a small settlement that, from as far back as the Early Iron Age, was present in what is now the upper part of the town, confirmed by some objects discovered there that date back to the late VII early VI centuries B.C.. A small but precious fragment of an attic cup from towards the end of the VI century B.C. introduces the age of the settling of a colony in Segni by Tarquinius Superbus and to the birth of the Roman town.

The main body of the exhibit, focusing on the ancient town, is in the great central hall on the upper floor.

From here, it passes to the territory itself. There is a section devoted to the products that characterised the ancient town, not only agricultural ones like its famous wine, but also manufactured ones, like the making of ceramics, shown by the waste products from the kilns and from stamps on tiles that tell us the owners of the factories came from the most important families of the period.

The two rooms dedicated to the Middle Ages end with the Late Middle Ages: the reuse of the ancient town and its adaptation to the new demands of the medieval world; the thirteenth-century rebirth, with the great architectural enterprises of the town in that period, amongst which the fascinating dilemma of the medieval cathedral stands out.

Finally, the Museum of Segni is not only exhibitive spaces. A multiuse room houses the scientific and didactic workshops: in the latter there are the widest variety of activities, from lessons, workshops and conferences to ceramics, mosaic, restoration courses etc., organized for schools on specific days as well as the general public in cycles of appointments.
