A stretch of the Segni polygonal walls

The Segni Council still preserves an imposing stretch of cyclopean walls where were probably first built around the 6th C. b.c. This particular structure is very well preserved; in certain more vulnerable areas of the town the enclosing wall was made double.

It may be that this Roman circle of walls had used part of the historic centre walls built by the Voscians or may have just built theirs on top of them.
The most striking an original of the Gates that open out in these walls is the so called Porta Saracena (Saracen Gate) made up of huge monolithic pointed blocks shorn off at the top to house an enormous horizontal flat arch stone.
