The polygonal walls in Canterano are located near what is now the town’s cemetery in the Chiastra district and are a reminder of the town’s ancient history, seeing as they were probably built during protohistoric times by the Pelasgians.
In fact the style of this construction is typical of the Pelasgian people who, having introduced this kind of defensive system, became famous for having mastered the techniques required.
Another element in favour of this theory is the town’s emblem, which represents a ship in full sail which, as legend would have it, carried the Pelasgians from the Syrian coasts all the way to Italy.
If the considerations made by historians are correct, Canterano could have been one of the Pelasgians first settlements, as they had to defend themselves against the Siculi who had set up camp on various peaks along the Aniene valley.
The Pro Loco Association of Canterano has recently cleared the brambles and wild plants that infested the site, so the thirty odd gigantic stones which are all that’s left of these walls are now visible once again.
