The Cyclopean walls run along the southern area of the town centre of Vicovaro, towards the river Aniene, in the district of Porta Pej (Foot Gate) . They date back to the 4th C. b.c. and reach the height of approximately 30 metres with 15 or 15 rows of blocks.
A second, rougher stretch is visible beneath the arches of the church of Sant’Antonio Abate: the ancient Via Valeria used to run between the two stretches of wall.
The walls are built in opus quadratum – a construction technique used in Ancient Rome, which consists of squared rectangular blocks of uniform height superimposed in regular rows to form a series of continuous weight bearing levels – a technique termed “cardellino”.
