Prince Camillo Pamphilij decided to build the majestic palace on the highest point of the town in the 17th century.
The fresco cycle in the palace is one of the most important examples of mid 17th century Roman art.
When the Pamphilij family died out in 1760, their titles and properties were inherited by Giovanni Andrea Doria, whose ancestor had married a Pamphilij. The palace of Valmontone then took the name Doria - Pamphilij.
Today the palace houses a branch of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and the Archeological Museum of Valmontone as well as events and exhibitions.
