Following the Via Francigena through Veio Park

 
Two days on-foot through the Parco di Veio (Veio Park), Saturday and Sunday, June 16-17, to promote the Via Francigena and sustainable tourism within this protected area. It is an opportunity to re-live the experience of the pilgrims along the Via Francigena, accompanied by donkeys from the area, while passing through medieval towns, tasting the typical "francigeno" bread of the pilgrims and sleeping along the route near a traditional hut.
 
The program offered by Veio Park in collaboration with the XX Municipio-Municipality of Rome, the towns of Campagnano di Roma and Formello, the Accademia Musicale dell'Alto Lazio, the Associazione I Sommari, Il Sorbo società cooperativa sociale and Viaggiare in Natura T.O., includes numerous activities related to the Via Francigena and the traditions and history of the area: guided tours of endangered sites in the areas visited, hiking seen as a sort of pilgrimage, food culture through tastings of local products and the pilgrims’ "Pane Francigeno” bread and a gala concert with piano and chamber music dedicated to the Via Francigena.
 
Program:
Saturday, June 16
The Via Francigena from Campagnano to Formello (10 km hike)
 
12 noon – Departure from Campagnano di Roma accompanied by the local donkeys of “Asinelli Veienti”, picnic with bag lunches provided by participants.
 
5 pm – Visit of the old town center of Formello and the Agro Veientano Museum.
 
7 pm – Aperitif and tasting of local products and “Pane Francigeno”.
 
8:30 pm – Night hike along the Via Francigena in search of fireflies (5 km round-trip).
 
11:30 pm – Sleeping in tents near a traditional hut along the Via Francigena. Early morning - "Colazione del Buttero", typical breakfast of Maremma area cowherds
 
Sunday, June 17
The Via Francigena from Formello to Isola Farnese (15 km hike)
 
8 am – Departure from Formello to explore the remains of the ancient Etruscan city of Veio, bag lunch provided by participants
 
1 pm – Arrival in Isola Farnese with tasting of freshly-baked bread from the old-town bakery and local products.
 
4 pm – Shuttle bus back to Formello.
 
Evening at the auditorium of the Vallelunga di Campagnano Autodrome:
 
7 pm – showing of a film about the Via Francigena.
 
8 pm – gala concert organized by the Accademia Musicale dell’Alto Lazio to close the 13th International Festival of piano and chamber music dedicated to the Via Francigena.
