The Cerveteri Fortress

The Rocca (Fortress) is the centre of Medieval Cerveteri and, in addition to the actual castle, it includes part of what originally was the Ancient Town, known for some time now as Boccetta.

Already as early as the 11th C. it appears well endowed with embattled walls, that still stand, and run along the perimeter of the tufa outcrop on which it the entire complex was built.
In the Boccetta area, located slightly below the castle, stands what remains of an ancient watchtower with a circular base which dominates a large part of the territory and the sea.
The fortress is certainly not as it once appeared, seeing as over the years it has gradually lost much of its flavour as a fortified town.
However, inside the fortress area one can still see the monuments and churches that have made the town’s history.
