It’s current appearance of the fountain was designed and built in 1636 by Pompeo Castiglia, at the community's expense although they were not too pleased to pay for the construction, commissioned to celebrate the victory by Marcantonio Colonna in the battle of Lepanto in 1571.
It’s original position was in what is now the Piazza Lepanto, beneath the Eastern façade of the Colonna Palace; it was moved from that sight in the Sixties of the Twentieth Century for traffic reasons.
In 1944 it was partly destroyed by Allied bombings, and was subsequently restored by Marino craftsmen after the war.
