Opened on 28th July 2002, the museum is hosted in the rooms of Rocca dei Colonna, including the ruins of an impressive tower and the church of St. Peter.

The building is said to date back to the 9th Century and it was designed to control the Sacco River Valley and the Via Prenaestina, as well as being a defence against Saracen raids.

The museum provides a wide overview of the fossil heritage of the Rocca di Cave territory.

The museum display was
curated by the Geological Sciences Department of Roma Tre University; it exhibits fossils and other didactic aids, such as models, which illustrate the environment of the Lazio region over various eras. There are information panels on the geological history of the territory.

The museum is divided into five sections that synthesize the homogenous aspects of the geological history of the western edge of the "Laziale-Abruzzese" platform. This is a geo-structural unit of the region’s evolution, part of the larger context of the evolution of the Lazio region and the Central Apennine.

The five sections are divided as follows:
- room A: "The changing panorama" (from today until 100,000 years ago);
- room B: "Mountains that rise, oceans that disappear” (from 100,000 to 65 million years ago);
- room C: "Mountain builders" (65-95 million years ago);
- room D: "On the edge of another sea" (95-150 million years ago);
- room E: "From dinosaur lagoons to the great continent" (150-25 million years ago).
