The Geophysics Museum is situated at the back of a fortress named Antica Fortezza Colonna (Ancient Colonna Fortress), in a panoramic position dominating the old town of Rocca di Papa. It illustrates the idea and the scientific data that led to the modelling of the inside of the Earth.

You begin with a philosophical game and end up at an exhibit; games, tools and scientific documents on geology, geography and physics of the Earth; sciences which have contributed to the knowledge of the Earth’s interior.

There is an interactive model of the inside of the Earth that illustrates how the ideas of scientists progressed up to the definition of a universally accepted model.

We also find illustrations of ideas that were beginning to consider what lay within the Earth’s centre, as people no longer believed it to be anything but spherical from the 16th Century onwards.

On the terrace, there is an illustration of the geological evolution of the Colli Albano volcano. You can see a plastic, geographical model of the Lazio region volcano and a series of samples of the main rock types of the area.

In the computer lab, visitors can make use of illustrative software on many geological and geo-physical topics.
