Church and Oratory of the Most Holy Annunciation - Riofreddo

The building and decoration of the Oratory of the Most Holy Annunciation was commissioned by Antonio Colonna, of the Riofreddo branch of the Colonna family. The date 1422 is inscribed into the external architrave which could refer to the painting of the interior frescoes which make this chapel one of the most important examples of early 15
th
century pictorial decoration in Lazio.
The single-chambered interior has a frescoed barrel vaulted ceiling. The entrance wall holds a fresco of the Crucifixion, the back wall the Annunciation showing the Virgin paying homage to the Archangel Gabriel whose background features an imaginary city embellished with porticos, loggias, mullioned windows and staircases. The vault shows the Triumph of Christ, surrounded by legions of angels, the evangelists and doctors of the church.
Attribution of the frescoes is unsure and varies between Arcangelo di Cola of Camerino and an unidentified Maestro (Master painter) of Riofreddo.
