Horace Museum Antiquarium - Licenza

Browse fullscreen [x]

The Horace Museum of Licenza is hosted within the Orsini Borghese Baronial Palace, and was one of numerous museums created after the Italian Unification.

The visit is enhanced by the presence of numerous didactic panels which comprehensively illustrate the materials, Horace’s Villa, the history of the museum and the territory.

Among the material exhibited, the following are of particular note: architectural elements in marble, such as Corinthian capitals, wall insert panels with engraved, geometric-patterned decorations, a coffered ceiling, a wonderfully crafted piece from one of the porticoes with acanthus-leaf decorations in the centre, among which frogs and small crabs in shells alternate; part of a complete male statue, one of the few remaining sculptures probably designed to furnish the outside of the villa, and various materials: lead aquarium ducts with the names of the Officinatores, lamps, coins, finely-crafted common ceramic vases carrying Italic and African seals, fragments of glass and blown glass receptacles and everyday objects, such as brushes, pincers, needles made from bone, beads for spindle balancing, loom weights and objects for personal decoration.

Among the tiles showing various stuccos and brickwork and mosaic flooring, there are numerous panels with fragments of frescoes still in their original environment.

The painting exhibition is accompanied by an initial graphic reconstruction of the subjects featured and an initial display of the main decorative motifs. A visit to Horace’s Villa is recommended.
