The international centre of contemporary art is housed in the Colonna Castle, built in the XI century.
The castle was extended in various phases, significant work was carried out between 1421 and 1431 by Pope Martino V (Oddone Colonna) to make a pleasant residence outside the city and in the XVII century, commissioned by cardinal Girolamo Colonna, to house the family art collection.
The centre is an institution whose aims are the promotion of the expression of contemporary artistic through the offer of international residential scholarships for young artists. In addition to this is the synergic activity of teaching, workshops on restoration and high-tech communication systems, which are able to produce positive effects on the territory from a cultural and economic point of view.
The visit to the monumental buildings begins in the atrium of the castle from where, through the entrance, on climbing the staircase to the noble floor (first floor), there is the so-called Prince’s Chapel (Cappella del principe), with frescos attributed to the circle of Cavalier d’Arpino and the numerous and spacious rooms, some of which have wooden coffered ceilings with their original decorations, where the temporary exhibitions are currently organised.
Some rooms on the second floor house a permanent exhibition of works by the Genazzanese artist Scipione Vannutelli (1834-1894), who mainly worked in the capital where he studied under Tommaso Minardi, and participated in an exhibition of the group In Arte Libertas in 1883.
The second room contains numerous watercolours on paper of women's portraits while, in the next two rooms, there are preparatory watercolour sketches and studies of costumes and masks of eighteenth-century inspiration.
