Via Labicana - San Cesareo

Browse fullscreen [x]

During the course of archaeological investigations by the Archaeological Superintendency of Lazio for the construction of the motorway link between Fiano and San Cesareo, a stretch of the ancient Via Labicana was brought to light, along with the remains of a fountain-nymphaeum on the Southern side of the street and the remains of commercial buildings (taberne) on the Northern side.

While these latter buildings date back to the 3rd C. AD, the fountain-nymphaeum was built in the first years of the 4th C., at the same time as the San Cesareo Torraccia. This complex, located in the Fontanile della Pidocchiosa hamlet, to the South East of the San Cesareo urban centre, is the only example to have been found on the original path of the via Labicana in the Rome area.
