Convento di San Francesco a Subiacop { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; }
The Monastery and Church of St. Francis are situated on a bucolic hill, immersed in the green countryside, at the edge of a thick chestnut forest.
Construction of the complex dates to 1327 and strong Romanesque-Gothic elements can be seen in the details of the church windows. It is the oldest such complex of the Subiaco region.
Inside the church, a ceiling of trusses rises over the nave, with a large triumphal arch, a deep chancel with two bays and a square choir.
The first altar, at the entrace, has a painting of the Virgin's Marriage attributed to Giulio Romano. The second, most imposing, altar holds a large canvas with the Virgin, from the late 18th century. A third altar, dedicated to St. Francis, has a canvas picturing the saint receiving the stigmata, attributed to Sebastiano Del Piombo.
On the main altar is a large triptych by Antoniazzo Romano of the Virgin and Child with Saints Francis and Anthony of Padua, signed and dated 2 October 1467. An second triptych, of the Trinity and adoring angels, was added above it in the 17th century.
The monastery holds a cloister with a notable well and a granite column from Nero's villa. The belfry can be seen from various angles. The Romanesque refectory, with 17th century frescoes, is reached through the cloister. The fresco on the back wall shows the Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles.
