At Lake Bracciano , at “La Marmotta" in Anguillara Sabazia, one of the oldest Neolithic villages in Western Europe was discovered in 1989. It is around 360 metres from the edge and 8 metres under the mud of the lake.

A large number of ceramic objects were recovered, such as bowls, plates and various vases.  A small soapstone statue of a “Mother Goddess” is a particularly interesting find.

In 2005, during the yearly underwater excavations carried out by the Prehistory Superintendency, a 9.5 metre pirogue carved from a single trunk was brought to light. It had broken into two parts and was found at a depth of 12 metres near "La Marmotta". Thanks to an agreement between the town of Anguillara Sabazia and the Prehistory Superintendency, the pirogue is kept in a 12 metre showcase, containing substances suitable for its conservation, at the Neolithic Exhibition Centre of Anguillara Sabazia

It is possible to see the pirogue being restored, alongside archaeological finds, videos, such as the educational cartoon “The Village Hidden in the Lake” and a video showing the phases of the recovery of the pirogue and the excavations. There are also illustrative itineraries – educational photographs, a permanent service open to the public handled by the cultural association “Neolitiche, Percorrendo la Storia" (Neolithic, throughout history), all new additions alongside the chance to admire the Neolithic pirogue recovered from the village submerged under the promontory of Anguillara.
