The Museum, originally named the "Garibaldian Museum", was founded in 1905, to conserve the relics of the military battles in 1867 between Garibaldi's volunteers and the Papal and French troops.

The collection is housed in the building adjacent to the Altar-Ossuary built in 1877 that, since 2003, has been recognised by the Ministry of Defense as a National Shrine.

The relics include the showcase of the Carboneria, Giuseppe Mazzini’s neck scarf, autographs by Garibaldi and his children and that of his son-in-law Stefano Canzio, authentic photographs of Giuseppe, Menotti and Ricciotti Garibaldi and other figures of the Risorgimento, as well as numerous weapons.

The material is set out in sections with comprehensive explanations given by experts to allow students and visitors to gain more in-depth knowledge of the history.
