The Naturalistic Museum of Monte Soratte is situated in the prestigious Caccia Canali, a late-Renaissance building with severe lines that boasts a feature by the architect Jacopo Barozzi, known as Il Vignola. The building is characterized by an important façade with pilasters and, inside, by a series of frescoes.
The museum’s exhibition unfolds in these very rooms. It opened in March 2003 with the aim of bringing together and coordinating all those activities that revolve around the Protected Natural Area of Monte Soratte.
The tour itinerary focuses on four main themes: geological characteristics, flora, fauna and human presence. Four themes give rise to the same number of distinct sections which, with the help of information panels, provide an in-depth overview of the phenomena. These are illustrated both from a scientific and didactic point of view.
In this latter case, the display is particularly original in how a parallel route has been made especially for “small children”. It uses simple and effective texts that can be immediately understood by the materials exhibited in the relative glass displays and cases.
In documenting the appearance of Man, the small collection of stone tool artefacts found in the Soratte area is of particular interest. The tools have been commented on and compared with similar pieces taken from different contexts.
