A painting on display in Chigi Palace, Ariccia

There will be a screening on March 5 (at 17.30 in the Sala Bariatinsky inside the historical Chigi Palace in Ariccia) of the video “Nemi’s sacred wood: myths and legends”. The projection is being organised under the patronage  of the Municipality of Ariccia and the ArcheoClub d’Italia in Ariccia.
The video features images from historical-mythological wall paintings that decorate the Locanda Martorelli in Ariccia.
It reconstructs the rite carried out by the rex Nemorensis (or "king of Nemi"), who was a priest of the goddess Diana. The ancient ceremony was recounted in the book “The Golden Bough” by James George Frazer, who was inspired to write his classic work on mythology by the rites carried out in the nemus Aricinum, the sacred wood in Nemi dedicated to the goddess Diana.
The venue for the screening,  inside the historic Chigi Palace in Ariccia, represents a unique example of a baroque residence, which has remained intact over the centuries, illustrating the prestige of one of the largest Papal families in Italy: the Chigis.
There is a museum inside the Palace and a centre offering many kinds of cultural activities: exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, conferences and study workshops.
