The parvise of the New Church of St. Stephen, the only church still open for worship in Fiano Romano, opens onto the main square in the ancient borgo of the town.
The building dates to the late 15th century and, according to documents unearthed in the State Archives, was remodelled in 1774.
The church was built on the basilica floor plan, with a nave and two aisles, and has round arches supported by square columns in travertino stone.
Past the triumphal arch is an altar in the form of a small shrine where two Corinthian capitalled columns support a tympanum with a wall painting of The Virgin with St. John the Baptist, St. Stephen, St. Blaise and St. Peter, by Antonio del Massaro, also known as Il Pastura.
The right aisle holds two frescoes rescued from the ruined church of Santa Maria ad pontem, the burial tomb of Niccolo III Orsini and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Annunciation (previously the Orsini Chapel) whose walls are frescoed with angels, probably by the school of Pinturicchio and which also houses a painting of The Saviour of the World.
The sarcophagus of Pietro Gregorio Boncompagni Ludovisi is found in the left aisle as is a beautiful bell cast in 1278 by Guidotto da Pisa and dedicated to St. Martin.
Other frescoes taken from the Church of Santa Maria ad pontem lead to a chapel with apse which was once completely frescoed and which now holds a wooden crucifix and an altar with a stone base which was perhaps part of an ancient column.
