The Odescalchi Castle, one of the most admirable examples of military architecture of its time, has become the symbol of Bracciano.
Napoleone Orsini set about transforming the fortress, previously belonging to the Vico family, into a majestic palace in 1470 and the work was continued by his son Virginio.
The town developed within these walls and was reached by crossing a drawbridge just before the Church of St. Mary Novella. The frescoes by the school of Antoniazzo Romano date to this time, which was the greatest moment of splendor in Bracciano's history.
1n 1696, the castle was ceded to the Odescalchi family, who have been the owners to this day.
The Caesars' Room (with busts of the 12 Caesars and an Antoniazzo Romano fresco) and the Weapons Room (which holds an important, wide-ranging collection of medieval weapons) are particularly notable.
The loggia leads onto the panoramic sentry walk that joins the six towers of the castle from where the magnificent secret garden can be admired.
The Castle is now a museum, convention centre and location for films, weddings and receptions.
