Palio delle Contrade, horseback race – Allumiere

Browse fullscreen [x]

The horseback race between local districts of Allumiere, known as the Palio delle Contrade, makes a welcome return for its 46th edition.

On the Saturday before the competition there is the traditional rehearsal, known as the “provaccia”, where the village squares are used to test the donkeys that will be racing in the Palio the next day. At the same time, each of the six competing districts (Burò, Ghetto, La Bianca, Nona, Polveriera and S. Antonio) organises festivities within its confines, distributing free wine, cakes and typical local products with hundreds of people all dancing to the musical accompaniment provided by local bands.

The Palio race itself happens on the Sunday. In the evening, the winning district throws a party and there are foods stalls, music and fireworks to celebrate late into the night.
