The Palo Odescalchi Castle, built on the site of a medieval fortification, dates back to 1500 and apparently derives its name (Palus) from the many marshes (Palude) in the surrounding area.
It has welcomed many illustrious guests including: Francesco Orsini, Felice Orsini della Rovere, Popes Alexander VI, Paul III and Sextus V and Cardinals Flavio and Virgilio Orsini.
The castle originally belonged to the Odescalchi family, the present owners, but at some point the manor was sold to Duke Grillo of Genoa and Marquis Carlo Loffredo of Treviso until 1870 when it returned to the Odescalchi. Prince Ladislao Odescalchi chose to reside at the castle which had since been surrounded by a borgo of artisans, peasants and shepherds and fishermen's houses, all in search of protection. In 1888, the Prince decided to create a new setting for the inhaitants of Palo and the summer tourists who came right up to the castle by train. So he created a consortium with Vittorio Cantoni, an engineer, and developed the strip of land between the two streams, Vaccina and Sanguinara: here Ladispoli was born.
The castle is private property.
