The Castle of Passerano is situated on an isolated hill in the countryside of Gallicano nel Lazio. Built during the 14th century, it is quadrangular with corner towers and a fortified entrance. After varying fortunes, in the mid 16th century it was attacked by the armies of the Duke of Alba who then sacked and destroyed it.
Over the following centuries, it was almost completely abandoned and used for agricultural purposes until it was bought by Paolo Marzi Quinteri who restructured the original building and bought the 1,000 hectares of farm land surrounding it, thereby creating a vast estate. Today it is property of the Campania Region and used for cultural purposes.
