Punta della Vipera Fishery - Santa Marinella

Browse fullscreen [x]

At kilometre 66 of the Via Aurelia, at the hamlet of Punta della Vipera at Santa Marinella, one can make out a large fishery, in an excellent state of preservation, built on blocks of pietra forte slightly above sea level: one of the most complete and interesting examples of a Roman fishery visible along the entire length of the Tyrrhenian coast north of Rome.

A considerably sized rectangular basin still stands, around 48 m. long by 30 m. wide, protected from the sea by a Roman concrete breakwater comprised of three stretches at right angles to each to each other approximately 3 metres wide.
The structure, designed for the rearing of fish and shellfish, was in all likelihood built towards the end of the 1st C. A.D. and is comprised of a number of rectangular basins surrounding a larger central circular basin measuring over 20 mt. in diameter.
The sturdy structure is built out of Roman cement with facings almost entirely in opus reticulatum, with the exception of the connecting arches between the three pools and the external wall of the central pool, made out of bricks.
The internal depth of the pools today in certain places reaches 2 mt. but in the past it must have been greater.
There are also traces of openings and hydraulic systems to distribute the rearing waters and regulate their outflow. Three long underwater channels, which depart from the sea-facing side assured the installation’s water flow, the constant purification of the water and the balance of the environmental temperature in the pools.
On the earth bound side, among the rocks of the coastline, from the corners of the eastern most side of the fishery, two symmetrical basins depart, of which many traces remain, and which may have been used to keep moray eels.
The fishery, which matches many types described by ancient authors and in particular Columella, was managed from a seaside villa located slightly inland, in a area that unfortunately is now completely built up. In the cellars of the private Galliano villa (via Aurelia n. 510 and 510) there are remains of the thermal bath quarters with rooms heated on suspensurae (a short brick column used to raise the flooring) connected to a praefurnium (furnace). Various walls in opera mixtum and brickwork, traces of mosaic paving, the discovery of capitols and marble decorations document the wealth and size of the villa, undoubtedly connected to the ancient via Aurelia and overlooking the fishery below.
