In the lush Elcini Park one can still see remains of the ancient Roman acqueduct, refurbished by the Colonna family to supply water to their castle.
The last part of the acqueduct, which was also used as an access bridge to the northern end of the castle, was destroyed by bombing during the second world war.
The bridge was later rebuilt in reinforced oncrete, with a single span, by the Civil Engineers.
The ancient acqueduct channelled the waters that spring from Colle S. Andrea right through to the Palace fountain, from where all the local population used to draw their water.
